Medullary nephrocalcinosis in idiopathic hypercalciuria
Idiopathic hypercalciuria is a metabolic abnormality characterized by excessive calcium excretion in the urine with normal serum calcium levels and is a common risk factor for formation of kidney stones and/or nephrocalcinosis. These patients benefit from a normal-calcium, reduced-animal protein, and low-salt diet, along with a thiazide diuretic.
متن کاملBone disease and idiopathic hypercalciuria.
Observational and epidemiologic studies alike have shown that idiopathic hypercalciuric (IH) stone-forming patients typically show bone mineral density scores that are significantly lower than those observed for age- and sex-matched normal subjects or those for nonhypercalciuric stone-forming patients. Most of these studies have relied on changes in bone mineral density and have not explored th...
متن کاملUnprocessed bran in treatment of diverticular disease of the colon.
Seventy patients with diverticular disease of the colon were treated with a high-residue, low-sugar diet including unprocessed bran. Follow-up for an average of 22 months showed marked relief of symptoms in 62 patients. Bowel habit was restored towards normal and abdominal discomfort relieved. Only seven patients were unable to give up the use of laxatives. Eight patients did not tolerate the b...
متن کاملClinical manifestations of pediatric idiopathic hypercalciuria.
Idiopathic hypercalciuria (IH) is a common metabolic disorder in children with protean manifestations, many of which can mimic other common pediatric diseases. Reports in the medical literature describe children with IH presenting with a wide array of calculi and non-calculi related clinical symptoms such as hematuria, urinary tract infections (UTIs), urgency, urinary incontinence and recurrent...
متن کاملTreatment strategies for pediatric idiopathic hypercalciuria.
Idiopathic hypercalciuria (IH) is a common metabolic disorder in children and is associated with the development of renal calculi, nephrocalcinosis, hematuria and osteopenia. The effect of various dietary modifications and available pharmacologic therapies on reducing urinary calcium excretion and/or urinary supersaturation is discussed in this article. The importance of a multidisciplinary app...
